Game Development: Hackathons

Resources for game design majors.

What is a hackathon?

Some of you may already know this, but for those who don't know, a hackathon is a collaborative event in which people engineer a functioning piece of software or hardware in a relatively short period of time, usually 24-48 hours. The term is a portmanteau of "hack," in the exploratory programming sense and not the security breaching sense, and "marathon." Similar terms include, but are not limited to: game jam, hack day, hackfest, datathon, and codefest.

Hackathons are great places to learn and develop skills as well as network with your current and potential colleagues.

Where can I find one of these hackathons?

Groups exist online, and here's a list of a few to get you started:

Also, bear in mind that some, but not all, hackathons do require some kind of entry fee. Again, this list is merely here as a resource.
