Welcome to the Mabee-Simpson Library: How-To

Home page for the Mabee Simpson Library at Lyon College.

How Do I?

Below are many common questions that come up when instructors first visit the library- both virtually and physically.

How do I use the Library of Congress System?

The Mabee-Simpson Library utilizes the Library of Congress system to organize our library.

The A-N sections may be found on the second/main floor. Additionally, the Juvenile and Reference Sections are found on this floor, along with our DVD collection and new acquisitions shelf.

The P-Z sections, along with the Regional Studies collection, may be found on the third floor.

If you need help navigating the library, please visit the main desk.

If you would like to request a library tour for yourself or your class, please email mslibrary@lyon.edu and we will schedule a time.

How do I request a material be purchased by the library?

Purchase requests can be made to the library by emailing kassandra.meyer1@lyon.edu or robert.krapohl@lyon.edu. Requests are filled based on need and availability. Some requests may be declined due to cost or other reasons. If you have further questions, please email either of the librarians mentioned above.

How do I reserve materials for a course?

Reserve course materials are a very important resource for students. The primary materials we have on reserve are textbooks, class readings, DVDs (and players), and lab manuals. Other materials may be added at the discretion of the librarians.

The library also has calculators that students may check out for 24-hours at a time.

Below is the link to the Reserve Materials Request form. Most requests are filled. The sooner we receive a request; the sooner we will be able to provide students with these resources.

If you need further information, please visit the Library Policies linked in the box above or reach out to kassandra.meyer1@lyon.edu .

How do I request a librarian-led instruction session?

To request an instruction session from a librarian, fill out the form below. This form allows for instructors to request a librarian to visit their class and give a presentation on research skills- which can be personalized to better fit the class. Please allow at least 24 hours, if possible, to allow a librarian to be assigned to the instruction request.

How do I submit an Interlibrary Loan Request?

If the Mabee-Simpson Library does not have access to a material (book, article, etc.) that you need access to, you can submit an Interlibrary Loan Request. This can be done by emailing ill@lyon.edu or kassandra.meyer1@lyon.edu and sending bibliographic information (such as author, title, journal date, page numbers, etc.). You can also use the built-in function on the library website to submit a request (when available).

Requests are typically filled within a week, but requests for physical items may take longer and other requests may be delayed due to various circumstances.

How do I request for a librarian to reach out to a student?

While we encourage students to reach out to the library first, we understand that sometimes students are hesitant or require outside interference. If you would like to request a librarian to reach out to a student, please email mslibrary@lyon.edu and the librarian best fit to fulfill the request (research help, study help, etc.) will reach out to the student. Some requests, depending on the nature, may be better suited for the Morrow Academic Center, advising, or student life, in which case a librarian will respond to you and direct you to the correct department.
